I recently worked on a proposal for an art mag that is being releasedby the folks at Lumpin and versioon fest...I wanted to post it for other people who reads this blog can comment on it...if i get the green light..this will be removed...wish me luck....here it is below...and sorry i have not posted in some time...i will get on it again once i get all the new skr release shit done....fuh eyea
Hello, I have been having fun writing about a call for a revolution in media as free use media…this is a manifesto of sorts in why we need one and maybe how it can be created. If an article in your mag gets the green light I will expand on these ideas and commentary with examples to support these ideas and interviews with those in media from all sorts of backgrounds. I foresee maybe this being a faux chief editor note like Carl Pope does on the first few pages of Sierra Club magazine…or maybe a commentary at the end of the mag..maybe I can be one of many who do this...or maybe a nut job that writes overzealous calls for change, but at least it gets people thinking about why they do art in the first place. I can make this serious or I can make it funny or both. I’m trying to make this to be open to commercial art as well with a hint (to put it lightly) of prejudice as more of a way to include it in this revolution instead of abolishment of it all together. Everything media can be mutated freely to promote significant progress good or bad…in any case, this media transparency would enable anyone to become eyes and ears to the world for those who want to immerse themselves into art media. It will because I think more people will participate in media with the fear of economic retaliation is removed. This I hope will promote a group or mass art media endeavors that transcends economic, social, and physical barriers. Of course any given artist may not know they are part of a group effort under these proposals but that’s the perks of this idea. This can be all buttshit…I am not immune to being ignorant….this may be all too preachy and all to self serving. Feel free to steer me into a given direction…or to steer clear form some of these ideas. I don’t need to concentrate on all these ideas maybe just choice ones. Also don’t feel pressure on using anything here…I’m a buddy, I won’t take offense..and if so, any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks for your interest. Okay here we go…
No one working in the doldrums of art media and progressive media is making any money anyway, so it should become non-commercial. Non-Commercial is pro media free trade…pro free trade has gotten a bad rep with the large giant spinning translucent amber cube that hovers over names like WTO, CAFTA, and NAFTA and all it’s horrid advantages to capitalist driven governments over culture driven governments. But in the humble art driven media environs it can be a helpful choice to obtaining material (video, images, music etc) that is untouched by government oversight and laws. But one can see how this can be abused in other commercial commodities it should not when it’s hard and electronic media (unless the hard media is made with toxic materials but what artist you know would do that to another). We are an uninspired nation that is comfortable with having pop culture being endlessly recycled because it all has become commercial and stale. Let all media be accessible and of free use to artists because art media has a direct effect on positive culture change.
Commercialization of media is bad because it creates the need for grants….which leads for the need of a non- résumé driven media…grants have the touch of legitimacy which every artist or trades person wants because it transcends the whole upper-educated art brat or egghead anti-system which undeservingly seeps passively from the pores from anyone involved in media. Since media is not a true free trade commodity right now is why grants exist in the first place. Sure grants are wonderful for those who knows others who knows others but most of what is going on in the warm underbelly of the youth, poor, and working poor is mist on the mountain of what they can offer to a positive art culture is largely ignored. Media grants have become politicalized and seasoned with a self deserving ideology that they became a sweaty anxious product rather than a social culture movement in which they were created to pass. Sure there are exceptions, but the majority of media grants are not led by a majority. But media grants looks good on a résumés for those who follow that sort of thing..like advertising consultants and other like medium producers. (I want to build on current positive grant experiences here due to some ignorance I have outside of music that do help progressive media culture. And I want to work ultimately in creating a system of blind grants given to anyone who writes a simple formal proposal regardless if it has support or non-support within the community in which the media originates from.) Also formal credentials will not mean shit. More about what you are doing now then what got you there. Media can create understanding of happenings of everyday life anywhere who cares to look…More will want to be involved with art media since there is no standard placed on it’s outcome. Media can cause mutations in culture in ways that can be described as evolutional. Why give the eyes and ears to a select few? Grants if they should exists should be given to groups like a coop where a collective idea can flourish
Art should not be owned….artistic freedom for all…Media must be a non-commodity. Media as a non-commodity becomes one of obligation to culture and not a catalyst to boom artistic sovereign states…images, sounds, studies, and research are always bought and sold as something we need to have and placed value to thus selling capitalist pop culture to the masses. One feels today that if you are involved in media one must come up with something and you could make the big money. Make it career of it thus submitting to the whims of commercialism. Media with guide lines and rules like any business culture.. Yuck. All this creates is a custom of bound competitiveness and limited media progression. What if media of all sorts…photographic images, music, video etc were accessible for all to use without fear of prosecution and social ejection. Funny, this way of thinking is already utilized by all the largest media conglomerates but in a way that the final result becomes ownership. What we are then left with is so aggressive and self-serving it becomes pretentious as a glossy auto-show pamphlet of some new caravan. There are people who’s job out there is to seek trends in art and media and manipulate it into selling a product that will attract a given demographic. I’m sure these folks dig away at popular internet personal sites such as myspace and facebook to obtain what motivates the youth culture and exploits it without any regard of the media movement that created it. The way this is done is amazing considering we are talking about what is subjected to us all around us every day in a capitalist nation such as ours..We take it for granted as the way things are done. One must be able to let go of media creation so it can be mutated and spread and not one person can use it for profit..If corporations are given person taxable status, then they too can’t declare ownership thus subject to mutation and free use as well. Exploitation would not thrive in a non-commodity media driven society. Any type of exploitation will be amplified for all to see…thus making media more transparent and a hell of a lot more fun. EBay would have no control of worth of media which makes media more accessible to all. Media will become transparent and inviting and not for sale. This can be done with approval of the masses if done in such a way that one only needs to credit the borrowed media with electronic links to make known this is a free cooperated effort. More information is free and everyone can be involved.
